BashCon XXV Schedule? Info?
« on: February 04, 2010, 10:52:18 AM »
Hey, I'm fairly new to the gaming scene. I never went to UT, but my wife is working there now and heard someone talking about BASHCon and we're both really interested in going. Neither of us have ever been to a convention before so we don't know what to expect and haven't seen any information about events or what there even is to do posted on the website or forum.

Can anyone shed some light on what there will be? We're primarily looking to get info on some board games we've never tried before and hopefully be able to try some out...is that something that will be available to do?

www.bashcon.com

I was very active as a BASHcon staff member in previous conventions, so I may be able to answer some of your questions.  I have since graduated from the university though, and will only be an attendee this year rather than a staff member.  So I'm not sure about what all is going on.  The current leadership of UT-BASH have effectively abandoned this forum.  It's used right now mostly as a way for BASH members and alumni to stay in touch and coordinate gaming.

Aside from the website I listed above, the current staff do not seem to have spent very much effort this year on getting the word out, or describing in detail what events are going to be happening.  As a long-time staff member I am quite disappointed in this.

As for board gaming, I recommend two events in particular that I know will be there this year.  Mayfair Games (makers of Settlers of Catan) brings a whole pile of games every year, some of which haven't even been released yet.  There is also an event called "Santa's Toybox" where a very large collection of board games and card games is brought and available for open-play.  Look for the jolly gentlemen with the white beard in christmas-themed apparel.  He's hard to miss.  Usually sets up shop right next to the Mayfair people.

Lots of people also bring their own games for open gaming.  I intend to do the same.  There are lots of opportunities to learn new games at BASHcon.  Hope to see you there.

Thanks for the info. Definitely sounds like something we'd be interested in! We'll be there on Saturday.

About time.  It's 2 weeks to the convention.

I'm noticing a distinct lack of Miniatures events.  Where's the 40k, Warlord, Warhammer Fantasy, ect?
And furthermore, when's the games bazaar?

And... guests?  Any guests at all this year?

What about exhibitors?

I spoke with a friend that is a long time 40k player and attendee, and he told me that he spoke with Marc about it recently and that Marc still plans on running the Adepticon Primer as usual. He did say that Marc hadn't gotten with the Bashcon registration folks about registering any of Warhammer events yet though. Given how close we are to the actual convention, wouldnt this cause problems? As in the 40kers and Fantasy folks not getting a room/space to run their events this year? Just has me curious given that this year was supposed to be the big year for Bashcon.

In regards to merchants, the last time I spoke with Darrel from the Toledo Game Room about the convention, he had largely pulled out of Bashcon. He still brings some goods with him, but from what I saw at his tables last year, it was nothing close to what he brought with him in previous years. From what I understand he takes most of his business to Origins these days because he stands to gain more in the way of profits than attempting to haul a bunch of gaming materials to Bashcon and maybe break even (due to having employees manning his merchant booth.) Past that, given the relatively small area that merchants had last year, I wouldnt even attempt to guess at who else is coming back and who else has pulled out from the convention altogether.

Please understand, I'm not trying to be a doomsayer. These are just observations that I have made over the last couple years. I like Bashcon, although if my wife had her way this year myself and Stardust Publications (my company) would not be present. I wanted to give it one more chance before we drop Bashcon altogether (because we have a schedule of other conventions that we plan to be running demos at).

@BenG - Thanks for the props! :)

Here are some highlights of what we're brining this year from Mayfair and my Toy Box

Witch of Salem from Mayfair is a co-operative game with a Cthulu theme.  Players work together with the help of Robert Craven (the Witch of Salem) to identify Old Ones and seal open portals before disaster strikes.

The Settlers of Catan - Ohio & Indiana map will be available for play.  The Traders and Barbarians expansion will also be onhand, as well as Catan Geographies: Germany.  A couple of Catan: Disasters variants will also be available - just ask!

Santa's Toy Box will include Monty Python Fluxx, the Blizzard of '77 Game (in case you haven't had enough of the snow!), Zooloretto, Dominion (with Intrigue and Seaside) and Pandemic: On the Brink.  I'm also bring two classic Rube Goldberg inspired games, for a lighter time.

There's a surprise gift for the first 20 folks who turn in tickets for either of these events.

Went on Saturday and had a great time. Special thanks to Santa for walking us through how to play Dominion and Witch of Salem. Had a great time playing both! Also really enjoyed the Reaper Paint & Take event...we're going shopping for painting supplies this week to start painting our Descent figures.
